Japan’s Comeback Game

Episodic Information

Once the undisputed king of global video gaming, the past two decades have seen Japanese dominance of the industry nosedive, and its glory days usurped by its surrounding neighbours. Reasons include its failure to capitalize on the emerging popularity of online gaming, the restrictive laws on Esports and video-game live streaming. But Japan is trying to make a comeback. Nintendo’s Animal Crossing spread quickly and widely during the initial COVID-19 period with 22 million downloads globally and counting. The documentary will examine Japan’s efforts to wrestle back its top dog status and the challenges they face in this epic battle for control of a global industry estimated to be worth $US270 billion by 2025.
