The Last Rites

Episodic Information

The bigger, or grander, or more elaborate, the better. Even for funerals.

Funerals are not just status symbols for the living and the deceased. These rituals also reveal secrets of what a culture cherishes in life – the values, attitudes and beliefs. This two-part series examines sweet, sacred and shocking traditional funeral practices and observes the people whose lives and livelihoods revolve around grief. The series will be covering professional mourners in Taiwan and Europe, as well as an ethnic group living in the Indonesian highlands who participate in rites where the deceased "live" for months with their bereaved families.
