Season 2

As countries look to nuclear energy to meet growing energy demands, Season 2 explores the global race to secure the fuels, materials and technologies that could power its future.

The series follows the quest for uranium, from major producers and reserves in Kazakhstan and Australia to renewed mining efforts in Sweden and Texas, and experiments to extract uranium from seawater in Japan. As competition for uranium intensifies, it also examines the potential of thorium, with China developing an experimental thorium reactor and India looking to harness its vast reserves.

The series then turns to advanced nuclear fuels and materials designed to make next-generation reactors safer and more viable, including work in Oak Ridge and the critical supply of HALEU. It also explores the accelerating pursuit of fusion energy, from breakthroughs in China and the UK to the race for scarce fuels such as tritium and helium-3 — a resource that is taking ambitions beyond Earth and towards the Moon.

Bringing together scientists, engineers and experts, Season 2 examines how the race for new resources, fuels and technologies could reshape the future of nuclear energy.

Season 1

There is renewed interest in nuclear energy globally, amid rising climate urgency and surging power demand. 

Episode one of The Nuclear Option traces the evolution of nuclear technology — from early experiments and successive generations of reactor designs to next-generation small modular reactors, microreactors, and the emerging pursuit of nuclear fusion, often seen as the holy grail of energy.

Episode two explores the steps countries are taking to make nuclear energy generation safer — from addressing security concerns at nuclear facilities and managing radioactive materials and waste, to building public trust among communities who are living with nuclear energy.

From early experiments under the Manhattan Project, to Finland and China’s nuclear strategies as a key part of their energy mix, to post-Fukushima sentiments in Japan, and the role of the UK’s nuclear constabulary — this series explores how countries are embracing nuclear energy as an increasingly vital part of a cleaner future.
