Youths in China are at the forefront of a rural renaissance. They’re ditching prestigious jobs in the city and moving to remote villages, transforming the country’s vast hinterlands.
This recent trend of urban to rural migration was unimaginable just half a decade ago. Since 2017, the Chinese government has been making “rural revitalisation” a key national strategy, but young people have shown little interest in moving to the countryside—until recently.
